Type Locality and Naming
Junggar Basin S. The type section is located in the Tuhulu anticline at Taxihe Township, Manas County, Junggar basin, Xinjiang. It was named by Compilation Team of the Regional Stratigraphic Table of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981.
Lithology and Thickness
Lower part, purplish red and greenish gray mudstone; the base, grayish green conglomerate; Middle part, primarily mudstone with marlstone; Upper part, yellowish green or grayish green mudstone, sandy mudstone and sandstone, containing several jaroisite bands. This formation is characterized by the green appearance and the presence of jaroisite bands, with a thickness of 296 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It conformably overlies the Oligocene to Miocene Shawan Fm.
Upper contact
It conformably underlies the Pliocene Dushanzi Fm.
Regional extent
It is located on the southern margin of the Junggar Basin. From the Taxi River westward the grains become coarse and eastward the thickness decreases to 100 –320 m from south to north the thickness increases.

Ostracods: Paracandona, Patamocypris and Cyprinotus; Bivalves: Psilunio and Cuneopsis; Estheria and fishes.

Depositional setting
It is interpreted as fluvio-lacustrine deposits.
